Factors associated with independent nurse prescribers' antibiotic prescribing practice: a mixed-methods study using the Reasoned Action Approach

Background The number of nurse prescribers is increasing, yet little evidence exists about their antibiotic prescribing behaviour. Aim To measure independent prescribers' (NIPs) intention to manage patients, presenting with an upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) for the first time, without and examine determinants this Methods This was a mixed-method study using Reasoned Action Approach (RAA). Content analysis data from 27 telephone interviews NIPs informed development questionnaire which tested validity reliability used in national survey across Scotland. Descriptive inferential statistical carried out determine patients significant influences on intention. Findings From 184 participants it found that intended URTI antibiotic. Key were perceived norm, behavioural control, moral norm.
